Why is it that a political debate between presidential candidates must be reduced to a sporting event?
The media rushes to declare a winner or loser so that the public can jump on or off a political bandwagon. The debate should be viewed as an exchange of ideas that can help inform the citizenry about where the candidates stand on the important issues and their respective views on the role of government. Instead of a discussion about the issues being raised we erroneously limit our post-debate dialogue to trying to figure out who scored the most points. The only thing that is defeated is the very purpose of the debate.
