Sophomore Sands powers Southwest past Goleman 37-6

Special to The Miami Herald

Four touchdown runs by Southwest sophomore running back Trevon Sands led the Eagles to a 37-6 victory over Goleman (2-5, 1-0) on Saturday night at Tropical Park.

Sands scored twice in the fourth quarter on runs of 55 and 80 yards. He finished the game with 181 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Goleman led early in the first quarter thanks to a 29-yard touchdown run by running back O’Brian Anderson. After that score, the Eagles defense was able to shut down Goleman’s double-wing offense and forced three turnovers.

The Eagles’ first score came on a 33-yard field goal by kicker Piero Enchegagray. Early in the second quarter Sands scored his first touchdown on a 34-yard run. Late in the quarter quarterback D’undre Pickett-White connected with freshmen receiver James Barnes on a 29-yard touchdown pass.

The Eagles led 17-6 at halftime.

Sands scored the only points of the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run. Enchegagray’s extra-point attempt was missed wide right. Each team’s kicking game was affected by wind gusts of nearly 30 mph.

Pickett-White passed for 65 yards and a touchdown. Pickett-White also ran for 106 yards. The Gators were lead by Anderson who had 70 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.

Southwest (6-0, 2-0) remains undefeated and will face South Miami on Saturday.
