St. Thomas Aquinas dominates team competitions

A pair of meet records were smashed at the BCAA swimming finals Saturday.

West Broward sophomore Melissa Marinheiro and St. Thomas senior Brandon Goldman set new marks in their respective events. Marinheiro swam a 4:58.07 in the 500 freestyle, besting her own meet record she set last year. Goldman, who also won the 200 individual medley, swam a 52.03 in the 100 backstroke at Central Park pool in Plantation.

“I wanted to go under my time for last year,” Marinheiro said. “I’ve been training really hard.”

In the team competition, St. Thomas Aquinas won both the boys’ and girls’ titles. The Raiders swept all six relays they competed in.

“I experiment with the lineup of the relays to see where we are at in the season,” St. Thomas girls’ coach Jimmy Parmenter said. “The gamble paid off.”

Individually, St. Thomas’ Philomena Fiorenzi won the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Fiorenzi, a senior, came within a fraction of a second of breaking the meet record in the 100 fly. She swam a season-best 2:10.18 in the 200 IM.

“I’ve been training a lot more fly,” she said.

Cypress Bay junior Emma Lincoln and Fort Lauderdale senior Lance Rutkin each won a pair of events. Lincoln won the 100 and 200 free. Rutkin won the 200 and 500 free. Rutkin, last season’s state runner-up in the 500, was surprised he won the 200 free. Rutkin, trailing from the start, caught Cypress Bay’s Francisco Parra in the final 25 yards of the race. With a sudden burst of speed, Rutkin passed Parra following the last turn and out-sprinted him to the wall.

“I played my race rather than try and take it out with [Parra],” Rutkin said. “It worked out; I caught him at the end.”

Rutkin won the 500 in less dramatic fashion. The senior handily won the race with a time of 4:40.74, one of the fastest times in the county this season.

“I feel like I’m in really good shape,” he said.
