What South Florida sports fans are talking about:

1. DOLPHINS

Club takes on Rams, honors Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas: Recent defensive heroes and fan favorites Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas go onto the Dolphins’ Honor Roll as the team takes on St. Louis and tries to get to .500 with a second win in a row. If their uniforms still fit, I say we sneak JT and Zach out there for one last game how ‘bout it?

2. BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

It’s Tigers-Yanks, Giants-Cards in championship round: League championships will include past three World Series winners after four division-series Game 5s, a first, ended with Washington’s monumental collapse against St. Louis Friday. Nationals led 6-0 but blew the lead after they went to the bullpen and brought in the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

3. HURRICANES

After Chicago debacle, UM back home vs. N.C.: In between last week’s 41-3 loss to Notre Dame at Solider Field and next week’s visit by FSU, UM played North Carolina here Saturday. Coach Al Golden admitted the stage and crowd “got to some guys” last week. Good news? Doubt players had to worry about getting nervous in front big crowd Saturday.

4. HEAT

Globe-trotting defending champs wrap up preseason trip to China: Miami beat Clippers in Beijing, now teams play Sunday in Shanghai before Heat returns for home game Thursday. While over there, Dwyane Wade, formerly with Nike Jordan, launched his new deal with Chinese shoemaker Li-Ning, as in, “D-Wade Li-Ning pockets with cash.”

5. LANCE ARMSTRONG

Release of new evidence leaves little doubt of cheating: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency made public new information, including testimony of 11 teammates that makes pretty clear Armstrong cheated to win seven Tour de France titles. You know how Lance is known for those ‘livestrong’ bracelets. I guess the new ones should say, ‘livewrong.’

•  Dale Earnhardt Jr. missing two “Chase for the Cup” races with a concussion ruins his chances to be in the hunt for the season crown when the season ends Nov. 18 at Homestead. Junior’s legion of fans are incredulous that NASCAR won’t pause its playoffs a few weeks to let him heal.

• For those who didn’t think anything could get lower TV ratings than a WNBA Finals, I bring you a WNBA Finals between the Indiana Fever and Minnesota Lynx!

• The Jets choice of Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow for a quarterback is like you wanting a safer neighborhood and having to decide between Beirut or Fallujah.

• That reminds me. Chiefs fans were under fire for cheering the injury to QB Matt Cassel. Um, do they not know that their backup is Brady Quinn?

• NFL commissioner Roger Goodell surprised no one by upholding his own Saints Bountygate penalties. Now Jonathan Vilma in an appeal is asking the court to recuse Goodell for bias and partiality. You think it’s time to break it to Vilma that he isn’t going to win this fight?

•  Lawrence Taylor jokingly suggested sex might be good for whatever ails Tebow. Dear Larry: Maybe a man who once admitted to relations with an underage prostitute should avoid sex jokes.

•  Al Jefferson of the Utah Jazz paid $23,287 for an oversized custom-made bed. Seriously? If I’m spending 23K on a bed it had better come with a supermodel under the covers.

•  Pete Rose said he does not think Derek Jeter will break his all-time hits record. Wonder what kind of odds Pete is laying?

• St. Thomas Aquinas High lost a second football game. Didn’t they used to lose about two games a decade when George Smith was coach? I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin.’

• Parting thought: Ohio State freshman QB Cardale Jones said on Twitter, “Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play football, we ain’t come to play school, classes are pointless.” Question: Is an idiot who comes out against education able to see the irony in that?

Greg Cote: Knicks would have been spicier matchup for Miami Heat

Miami Heat players have been steadfastly neutral in claiming no preference as they waited for Indiana and New York to figure out which would play the underdog in the NBA’s upcoming Eastern Conference finals. Confident champions do not deign to worry about who’s next; they leave the worrying to opponents. The lion who runs the jungle does not much care if he is feasting on zebra or antelope, after all.

Greg Cote: Miami Heat’s playoff health tied to Dwyane Wade

Most of the unusually low numbers from this game should delight Heat fans. Those numbers stunk up this city Monday night and all but required the Bulls arena to be immediately fumigated following this NBA playoff series Game 4 here. Those numbers were Chicago’s meager 65 points scored on abysmal 25.7 percent shooting — both owing largely to a Miami defense that is that good, yes.
