Mitt Romney claims that President Obama gave $9 billion to green energy companies and that half of the recipients failed. That’s not the truth. The Energy Department, thanks to the president’s stimulus package, has provided funding and incentives to a host of energy independence programs — some of them created during George W. Bush’s administration. The initiatives include investments in modernizing the electric grid, improvements in energy efficiency that help customers save money, and incentives for renewable energy production — such as wind and solar.
With the exception of three high-profile bankruptcies, most notably Solyndra, the investments in clean energy technologies are showing results and positioning the United States to be a global competitor in the clean energy economy.
During President Obama’s tenure, the United States has increased electricity generation from wind resources by almost 200 percent and almost 300 percent from solar.
