Opening Friday

Alex Cross (PG-13): Tyler Perry sets aside his Madea drag and gets serious in this adaptation of James Patterson’s novel about a detective chasing a murderer who killed a member of his family.

Paranormal Activity 4 (R): Even more bump-in-the-night found-footage frights, just in time for Halloween.

Voters in America: Who Counts? (8 p.m. Sunday, CNN ) With the presidential election just a couple of weeks away, the impact — and intent — of new state laws on voting and registration is a hot controversy. CNN senior correspondent Joe Johns takes a comprehensive look at the issue.

The Walking Dead (9 p.m. Sunday, AMC) The third season of this series about a scruffy band of survivors of a zombie apocalypse is even more gory and violent than the first two. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but just keep the phrase “intestine-eating” in mind as you tune in.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9 p.m. Tuesday, The CW) Funny and affecting, this cross between Grey’s Anatomy and Mean Girls stars Mamie Gummer as a talented but socially hapless doctor whose hopes to escape her geeky past are dashed when her high-school nemesis shows up at the hospital where she’s interning.

Commander in Chief: Inside The Oval Office (10 p.m. Thursday, Military Channel ) A new documentary series examines how U.S. presidents make critical military decisions. The inaugural episode makes use of secret White House tapes as it details how President Kennedy inched up to the edge of war — and then backed away — during the Cuban Missile Crisis, 50 years ago this month.

The Girl (9 p.m. Saturday, HBO) Toby Jones ( The Hunger Games) plays director Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller ( Factory Girl) is actress Tippi Hedren in a docudrama account of how Hitchcock launched Hedren’s career with The Birds, then destroyed it when she rejected his romantic advances.
