Coral Reef captures girls’ swim title at GMAC

Special to the Miami Herald

Coral Reef won the girls’ team title at the GMAC swim meet Friday, a first in close to a decade. The Barracudas edged perennial power Palmetto 87-74.

Coral Reef freshman Kelly Fertel was instrumental in Coral Reef’s win. Fertel took first in the 100 breast, 200 individual medley and was on the winning 200 free relay. Senior sprinter Carla Robles won the 50 free and anchored the 200 free relay. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” Coral Reef coach Martha Dennis said. “The girls have worked very hard. We are looking forward to districts.”

On the boys’ side, Palmetto beat Columbus 96-48. The Panthers won all three relays, including the 400 free in a time of 3:23.51. Palmetto’s Samuel Simmdy, who has been limited in practice recovering from an injured heel, won the 500 free in a time of 4:44.58. Smiddy, who swam a 5:15.38 in prelims and was in lane seven, easily won the distance race, with a 11-second advantage.

“I have a lot of training behind me,” he said. “I split my heel and I got a bunch of stitches. In prelims I was pushing off one leg.”

Smiddy also won the 100 fly in a :52.82. Individually, Reagan’s Isabella Paez won the 100 free and 100 back.

Coral Gables sprinter Anthony Soto won the 50 and 100 free. Krop’s Nicolas Coard won the 100 back and tied for first in the 200 free.
