As far-fetched as it sounds, the Coarsegold Tarantula Festival’s apparently got legs. Now in its 14th year, the event celebrates the eight-legged creatures that make their home in this community in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada about half an hour south of Yosemite National Park. Each fall the amorous arachnids make their way out of the burrows in the search of a mate, and each fall the residents come out with “Hairiest Legs” contests, a tarantula themed-baking contest (don’t ask), costume contests, tarantula races and more. Kids can learn all about tarantulas as well, and even get the chance to hold one. This year’s event takes place Oct. 27.
