You might not have heard of the Brazilian group Trio da Paz, which performs Tuesday night at Festival Miami, but you likely have heard guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilsson Mata and drummer Deduce da Fonseca.
For years, these virtuosos have been go-to players for artists including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Yo Yo Ma, Astra Gilberto, Michael Becker and Luciana Souza.
As an acoustic trio, Lubambo, Matta and da Fonseca have an open sound and swing hard and elegantly, seemingly effortlessly, blending jazz and Brazilian traditions in both their playing and their repertoire, which has included standards such as Miles Davis’ Seven Steps To Heaven and Paul Desmond’s Take Five, but also Milton Nascimento’s classic Veracruz and Ary Barroso’s Aquarela do Brasil.
Their program for the University of Miami’s Festival Miami promises originals plus music by Jobim, Luiz Bonfá and Chick Corea. A treat.
