Ferguson girls’ volleyball coach Greg Shanower gave every player on his team a quarter before Thursday night’s match against Lourdes.
Don’t worry. This isn’t any kind pay-for-play scandal. There was a message behind making every Falcon 25 cents richer.
“Don’t let that be your fate,” Shanower told his team.
With a loss to the Bobcats, Ferguson and Lourdes would’ve been tied atop District 15-8A, and the No. 1 seed would’ve come down to a coin flip.
Playing with those quarters in their shoes, Ferguson defeated Lourdes for the second time this season 25-18, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21 at Columbus. No coin flip will be necessary.
Marissa Jimenez’s two blocks could not have come at a more opportune time as they killed Bobcat spikes to convert the 24th and 25th points of the final set to seal the deal.
Shanower feels the way the team responded coming off the second-set loss was what catapulted it to victory.
“In the second [set], you could see them tensing up, and I told them in the third, ‘There’s no reason to tense up. Remember, there’s no pressure on us,’” Shanower said. “They went out with that attitude, jumping around, having fun.”
Sisters Annika and Alexandra Reczek stepped up for Ferguson. Annika finished with 14 kills and three aces while Alexandra registered nine kills plus a team-high 22 digs.
Sophie Serrano racked up a team-leading 39 assists.
Captain Daniela Suarez had 11 kills and five blocks.
“She’s a beast,” Shanower said. “She just has this will. She hates to lose. That girl could probably play defensive end on the football team.”
Clinching the No. 1 seed in the district is pivotal because Ferguson now avoids Southwest, a dangerous No. 3 seed, and Lourdes until the district championship.
