I support the principle of advancing the financial participation of minority communities. I understand the righteous motivation and political expediency of the Miami-Dade School Board providing for a minority advantage in the services and purchases that would be required in the proposed School Board bond initiative.
The question is: Which groups shall be designated as minorities? In a community where it is increasingly difficult for non-Spanish speakers to find good jobs and the so many voters, office holders and the population are Hispanic, it would seem both illogical and hypocritical if Hispanics should be one of the groups designated as a minority.
Perhaps, the School Board’s historical records of the participation of the various ethnic groups and women should be the basis for justifying a minority designation.
