Another architecturally magnificent and historical building is on the verge of landing in developers’ hands. It seems the Archdiocese of Miami is planning to sell St. Jude Catholic Church on Brickell Avenue because it needs the money.
This church was originally the chapel for the Academy of Assumption, where countless students, including me, received sacraments, married, baptized their children and mourned their loved ones.
After the school closed, it became St. Jude Melkite Church, continuing its tradition of bringing solace to those in despair.
There’s no amount of money in the world that can replace the love, peace and compassion vibrating in the chapel’s walls. It’s an oasis of tranquility amid the frigidity of the high-rises.
The church needs to be designated a historic monument to protect its legacy.
