TEAM OF THE WEEK

Alex Lee’s touchdown run on a gutsy fourth-and-goal call in overtime helped the Miramar football team (3-3) upset St. Thomas Aquinas 27-24. Lee helped the Patriots reinsert themselves into the Class 8A state title picture with 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Caroline Nava, Westminster Academy, girls’ swimming: Nava won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle to lead the Lions over Coral Springs Charter and the South Florida HEAT.

Rachelle Alexander and Daesha Rogers, American Heritage, girls’ cross-country: Alexander (20:28) and Rogers (20:52), making her season debut, finished 2-3 at the Varela Viper Invitational.

Ethan Cairns, Western, boys’ golf: Cairns tied for a meet-low 39 to help the Wildcats beat South Plantation 163-226.

Julia Montgomery, Pine Crest, girls’ cross-country: Montgomery won the FSU Pre-State Invitational small school girls’ title in 18:58.

Alexa Cruz, St. Thomas Aquinas, girls’ cross-country: The freshman ran a career-best 18:18 (No.9 in Florida) to place seventh and help the Raiders finish second in the FSU Pre-State Invitational girls’ elite race.

Pasqual Burgess-Beckett, Monarch, football: Burgess-Beckett threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns as the Knights (4-1) beat host Piper 38-22.

Franci Sequani, Cardinal Gibbons, girls’ volleyball: Sequani had 10 kills and 10 blocks to lead the Chiefs over North Broward Prep in five sets.

Lorenzo Jerome, Taravella, football: Jerome threw three touchdown passes to help the Trojans (4-2) beat Everglades 28-14.

Kirsten Kuhl, Douglas, girls’ volleyball: Kuhl had 16 assists, nine points, six kills and eight digs in a four-set victory over Coral Glades.

Brandon Vicens, Archbishop McCarthy, football: Vicens ran for a touchdown and passed for another to help the Mavericks (4-1) beat Pines Charter 34-7.

Emily Kilgore, Highlands Christian, girls’ volleyball: Kilgore had 16 digs, 10 kills and 13 points to lead the Knights over Sheridan Hills in four sets.

Sam Haubenstock, Pine Crest, girls’ golf: Haubenstock shot 21 to win medalist and lead the Panthers over Calvary Christian 101-129.

Matt Smutny, South Florida HEAT, boys’ swimming: Smutny won the 200 IM, 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle in a tri-meet against Westminster Academy and Coral Springs Charter.
