Warrant officer from Coral Springs killed in Afghanistan

A man from Coral Springs was one of two soldiers killed this weekend in Afghanistan, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Sunday.

Warrant Officer Joseph L. Schiro, 27, of Coral Springs died from gunshot wounds suffered Saturday in the Chak district of Wardak Province in Afghanistan, the department said in a statement.

Also killed was Staff Sgt. Justin C. Marquez, 25, according to the statement. Marquez was from Aberdeen, N.C. He too died from gunshot wounds.

Both men were shot while on “dismounted patrol,” the statement said. Schiro and Marquez were assigned to the 1st Special Forces Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), out of Fort Bragg, N.C.

No other information was immediately released.
