A car fire on the second floor of a parking garage behind a downtown Miami Publix Friday afternoon sent billows of black smoke across Biscayne Boulevard.

Five Miami fire trucks responded to the fire at 5 p.m. Firefighters had the flames under control 30 minutes later. No one was injured.

The supermarket, at Northeast 17th Terrace and Second Court, was briefly evacuated.

“The fire was completely under control by 5:30 p.m.,” said chief Eloy Garcia from Miami Fire Rescue.

Police blocked traffic on 18th Street between Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast Second Avenue and on Second Avenue between 17th Terrace and 18th Street as firefighters worked the fire.

The parking garage was quickly reopened and traffic flowed again by 6 p.m.
