One of the problems with the term “entitlement” is the unspoken interpretation that differs between Democrats and Republicans.
Democrats correctly think of entitlements as a proper right, something justifiably due. Republicans see entitlements as a government largess or benefit given to the needy.
Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security are either benefits that people have purchased or the country has agreed is a right of citizenship. It’s as much an entitlement as are farm subsidies or oil subsidies. No one calls them entitlements; they haven’t been given the pejorative label.
