I wasn’t surprised by the Oct. 1 article, It’s crisis-as-usual for Miami finances, or by the lack of vision and solutions from elected officials interviewed. As a resident and taxpayer, I send about eight emails a year to my commissioner, Francis Suarez, and he never responds.
In one I recommended that he look at the City of San Diego’s Corporate Partnership program, which has been very successful at generating revenue. My last email to the mayor and commissioners recommended the creation of a citizen budget and finance committee and laid out guidelines for the appointees, such as MBAs, CPAs and individuals with a degree in economics. I believe it would be beneficial to a city struggling with its finances. The only response was from Mayor Tomás Regalado who said it seemed like a good idea.
Government can only work when all parties are part of the solution.
