Florida Gators focus on protecting Jeff Driskel

Miami Herald Writer

With LSU and its dominant defensive line coming to Gainesville on Saturday, offensive coordinator Brent Pease said the Gators will have to get creative with how they use quarterback Jeff Driskel on passing downs.

LSU is 36th nationally with 11 sacks, while Florida is 98th with 12 sacks allowed. But Pease said it’s not just the sacks that can affect the quarterback. Pressure can divert a quarterback’s eyes from his targets, preventing a completion or positive gain.

“Their four-man rush really gets to you,” Pease said. “So, you’ve got to make sure you have answers to those guys across the board that can beat you.’’

Pease said he will call plays designed to get Driskel moving in the pocket so LSU’s front four is forced to attack different angles and gaps. “You got to kind of change where he’s [Driskel is] going to be so they can’t zero in,” Pease said.

• Right tackle Chaz Green (ankle) “should be available” for the LSU game, Pease said. Green has been out since leaving Florida’s game against Texas A&M on Sept. 8. He has been in a walking boot and has not dressed for UF’s past two games.
