What does merit retention mean?
I’m a conservative Republican lawyer who supports the retention of Florida’s three Supreme Court Justices. Not that I agree with all of their rulings, far from it, but because I believe in judicial independence and because these justices have never violated their oaths.
However, the Florida Bar was wrong to launch an unregistered campaign for these liberal justices and throw the entire issue into the vortex of partisan politics.
It’s especially suspicious because the Bar has never protested the vicious, political assaults on the Supreme Court of the United States by Pres. Obama and the Democrats.
The supporters of the Florida Justices are from both political spheres and already have plenty of support privately. It may be time to review the status of the Florida Bar, which is only subject to the supervision of the Florida Supreme Court Justices.
Why should lawyers be the only profession exempt from legislative oversight; that is, from the oversight of the people of Florida?
