TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Belen’s boys and Ransom Everglades’ girls swept the team championships of the Youth Fair Swimming and Diving Invitationals. Julian Ballestas led the Wolverines boys by winning the 100 and 200 yard freestyle races, and Boleck De Pawlikowski won the 100 backstroke. Laine Morgan and Annie Valls led Ransom, winning the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Diquan Johnson, Carol City, football: Johnson ran for 171 yards on 19 carries, scored four touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to lead the Chiefs to a 34-13 win against North Miami Beach.

Tray Fance, Varela, football: Fance ran for a touchdown and caught another to lead the Vipers to a 47-7 district win against Ferguson.

Darius Tice, Northwestern, football: Tice ran for 189 yards on 22 carries and scored the game-winning 72-yard touchdown in a 7-0 win against Southridge.

Daniela Leal, Coral Reef, volleyball: Leal had 25 assists, 17 digs, five aces, six kills and five blocks to help the Barracudas beat Palmer Trinity.

Nahir Navarro, Hialeah, volleyball: Navarro had five aces, seven kills and 11 digs to lead the T-Breds to a win against North Miami Beach.

Avery Lopez, Belen, boys’ cross-country: Lopez finished individual runner-up with a time of 15:13 but led Belen to the team title of the Race of Champions of the flrunners.com Invitational.

Courtney Filliben, Lourdes, girls’ cross-country: Filliben finished a Dade-best 16th at the Race of Champions of the flrunners.com Invitational.

Wayne Denswil, St. Brendan, boys’ swimming: Denswil won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke at the Youth Fair Invitational.

Isabella Paez and Arianna Noya, Reagan, girls’ swimming: Paez won the 200 free and 100 fly, and Noya won the 200 IM and 500 free at the Youth Fair Invitational.

Beau Clavijo, Miami Beach, boys’ golf: Clavijo shot a 34 to lead the Hi-Tides to a win against Braddock.

Alix Hamilton and Chloe Horton, Ransom, girls’ golf: Hamilton and Horton each shot 37 to lead the Raiders to a win against Carrollton.

Jason Gonzalez, Columbus, boys’ bowling: Gonzalez bowled a 696 series to lead the Explorers to a 5-2 win against TERRA.

Jasmine Smith, Coral Reef, girls’ bowling: Smith bowled a 510 series to lead the Barracudas to a win against Palmetto.

The Varela girls’ volleyball team won the Silver Bracket at the Palm Beach Invitational over the weekend.

The Vipers (7-7) played three matches Saturday, defeating Piper (25-16, 25-12) and Berean Christian (25-23, 25-21) before taking down American Heritage 25-19, 25-17 in the Silver Bracket Championship.

Valeria Ibarra had 20 aces in the three matches combined and accumulated a team-high 22 assists in the final match against American Heritage.

In that same match, Samantha Cruz registered 11 kills and four aces, and Claudia Campero contributed six kills and three digs.
