FIU Golden Panthers might get running back relief

Special to the Herald

FIU (1-4, 0-1 in the Sun Belt Conference) might get a little relief at running back Thursday night when the Panthers take on Arkansas State (2-3, 0-1) at FIU Stadium.

Running back Darian Mallary “should be back this week” coach Mario Cristobal said, calling it a “big plus.”

Fellow running back Kedrick Rhodes came off an injury to play Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette, but Cristobal noted “he was tentative. We don’t know where he will be at for this week.”

Rhodes rushed for only 15 yards on 11 carries against Louisiana-Lafayette.

• Arkansas State comes in as the defending Sun Belt champion and features quarterback Ryan Aplin, who ran for 164 yards and passed for 124 against FIU a year ago.

• Thursday’s game vs. Arkansas State will be televised on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.
