Unopposed seven times, Broward State Attorney Michael Satz is going for a 10th term.
The Democrat faces Republican Jim Lewis, 55, a Fort Lauderdale lawyer who has run for various offices since 1984, most recently for Florida attorney general two years ago.
Our choice is Mr. Satz, 70, a hands-on, trim-and-fit prosecutor who still tries cases.
Mr. Satz’s critics say he’s too eager to try drug possession cases that clog up the court system. But many of those cases deal with the illicit sale of pain killers like oxycodone. Thanks to a new state program that Mr. Satz fought for, those “pill mills” are finally getting shut down.
Mr. Satz oversees 509 employees on a $13 million budget. He is focusing on improving technology to combat cybercrimes, among emerging crime trends.
For Broward County state attorney The Miami Herald recommends MICHAEL SATZ .
