A 31-year old man was struck and killed by a train while trying to cross train tracks in Pompano Beach Saturday evening.

Investigators believe the man was somehow distracted, either talking on a cell phone or using an iPod, and did not see the train when he crossed the tracks at Northeast 48th Street and North Dixie Highway.

Witnesses reported seeing the red flashing lights on and the gate down at the time, indicating the train was coming.

Investigators said the train conductor saw the man and began honking his horn.

By the time the man turned to see the train he seemed surprised, witnesses told police.

Investigators believe it was an accident.

The victim’s name has not been released.
