Jackson overcomes penalties to get win against Miami Beach

 

The Firebirds’ two touchdowns came from running back Gabriel Hernandez, who caught a 35 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Sanchez and scored on a 20 yard run.

Before the game a moment of silence was held for Christian Aguilar, a Doral alumnus who graduated in 2012 and has been missing since September 20 in the Gainesville area. Doral Academy has been collecting donations to assist Aguilar’s family.

• Late Friday — Calvary Christian 14, Champagnat Catholic 6: The Eagles (3-2) scored all their points in the first half and held on for the victory against the visiting Lions (1-3) in a nondistrict matchup.

Isaac Hoza (201 yards on 12-for-26 passing) later threw his only touchdown pass of the game, a 48-yarder to Eric Fifelski midway in the second quarter. Fifelski finished with four catches for 95 yards.

The Lions’ Charles Williams scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 4:29 remaining to cap a 99-yard, 13-play drive.

• Late Friday — Key West 45, Keys Gate Charter 0: Key West’s triple-option offense has produced long touchdown runs all season — and it did again. Key West (4-1) forced Keys Gate (2-2) into six turnovers.

University School swept the championships of the Suns Invitational at Nova Southeastern University Saturday. Miami Country Day was the lone Dade representative and finished fourth in boys and girls.

Boys’ team scores: 1. University 486; 2. Sagemont 459; 3. Boca Raton 448; 4. Miami Country Day 336; 5. Calvary Christian 321; 6. Somerset 186; 7. Chaminade-Madonna 185.

Girls’ team scores: 1. University 576; 2. Boca Raton 503; 3. Calvary Christian 391; 4. Miami Country Day 367; 5. Sagemont 233; 6. Chaminade-Madonna 190; 7. Somerset 74.
