Jackson overcomes penalties to get win against Miami Beach

Belen Jesuit’s cross-country team secured its fourth championship of the prestigious Race of Champions at the FLRunners.com Invitational on Saturday morning at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville.

Led by senior Avery Lopez, who was the race’s individual runner-up, the Wolverines finished with a meet overall-best team average time of 15:59. Lopez posted a personal record time of 15:13.20 in the 5K race as Belen scored 87 points. Palmetto Ridge’s Carlos Miranda won the race with a time of 15:07.90.

Belen has the most team titles in the 13-year history of the meet.

Coral Reef sophomore Kurt Convey finished eighth with a time of 15:39.80, one spot ahead of Belen’s Fabian Tomas (15:42.90).

Ferguson finished third in the girls’ Race of Champions after scoring 147 points. Estero won the title with 75 followed by Fort Walton Beach with 137. Lourdes’ Courtney Filliben (16th) and Lourdes Brea (19th) were the only Dade runners to finish in the top 20 individually.

OTHER RACES

Ransom Everglades boys finished runner-up in the Boys’ Invitational race. Ransom’s girls finished 10th in the Girls’ Invitational. Monsignor Pace finished a Dade-best fourth in the Small School race. Doral Academy’s girls finished a Dade-best third in the Small School race.

• Late Friday — Dade Christian 40, Westland Hialeah 19: Dade Christian dismantled Westland Hialeah with their dynamic two-headed monster, accounting for 237 of the team’s 323 rushing yards. With only 12 carries, Ike Steadman rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Andrew Florvil gained 101 yards on 19 carries and also scored two touchdowns.

Leading Westland Hialeah was Patrick Stephenson, who accumulated for 133 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns.

• Late Friday — Belen 41, Doral 12: Belen opened the scoring two minutes into the game when Xavier Hines returned a fumble 38 yards. Alex Diblasi led the Wolverines with 68 rushing yards, including a 35 yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Brandon Silvestry added 51 yards including a 25-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
