Follow Haiti’s example

A Sept. 25 article about Haiti banning plastic bags and foam containers, states: “Meanwhile, in Florida, a 2009 attempt by the state’s Department of Environmental Protection fell flat, thwarted by consumers.”

Really? As I recall, The Miami Herald ran an article in October 2009 stating that Florida might become the first bagless state in nation.

Florida’s DEP posted recommendations on its website phasing out plastic bags in five years, but the posting was taken down within 24 hours.

By the time the article was published, those recommendations were history. I seriously doubt that they were pulled because of consumer complaints. More likely, they were threatened by the deep pockets of the plastic bag industry.

Congratulations to Haiti for setting a great example.
