Re John Rollins’ Sept. 20 Other Views column, Focus on Citizens’ time bomb: If funding Citizens liabilities is so difficult, why haven’t our elected officials supported legislation that would provide a national windstorm program? Sen. Bill Nelson proposed such legislation in 2007, but there was no support and it died.
We could develop a federal windstorm program or augment the already existing national flood program. Companies wishing to write other profitable lines of insurance could be required to underwrite a certain amount of windstorm coverage.
A uniform and fair windstorm mitigation inspection report could be established and windstorm coverage could be reserved the same as liability coverage.
The voters of this state have been promised a solution to the property insurance problems. So why hasn’t there been a solution?
