Coast Guard detains drug smugglers, seizes $35 million in cocaine

Similar stories:

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Resolute seized nearly 3,000 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $35 million and captured four Honduran drug-smuggling suspects off the coast of Honduras.

The Resolute’s helicopter crew, based in Jacksonville, first spotted the four men about a 35-foot go-fast boat while on patrol. Miami’s 7th Coast Guard District also deployed the crew from Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant to assist in the chase.

During Tuesday’s pursuit, the four suspects jumped into the water and were fished out by the Resolute’s smallboat crew. The boarding team were able to stop the unmanned go-fast without incident.

Resolute’s team found 53 bales on board the vessel covered in a white powdery substance that later tested positive for cocaine.
