The man who Hialeah police say shot at officers with an AK-47 and sub-machine gun has been caught.

Police and federal officials tracked down 23-year old Andy Roman on Wednesday afternoon near Tampa as he rode in a car with a female friend.

Roman will be charged with at least five counts of trying to kill a police officer, according to the Hialeah Police Department.

Police say Roman shot at Hialeah officers as they investigated a separate shooting at The Crossway Motel, 1775 W. Okeechobee Rd. Officers chased the shooters as they sped away in an older-model Chevrolet Caprice, still shooting at the cops.

Another man, 22-year-old Osmani Ojeda, drove the getaway car, police said. Ojeda and Roman dumped the car at Northwest Sixth Avenue and 45th Street in Miami, ran into a residential neighborhood, and hid. Ojeda was found in a shed, police said. He is charged with trying to kill a police officer, fleeing from police, and resisting an officer with violence, according to corrections-department records.

Roman managed to evade law-enforcement officials — until Wednesday afternoon.

Hialeah police spokesman Carl Zogby wrote in a statement that Roman didn’t put up a fight when confronted with “the overwhelming show of force that was used.”

“This dangerous fugitive was captured with the help of concerned callers,” Zogby wrote.

Roman has a history of being charged with violent crimes.

His first arrest, on charges of battery and aggravated assault with a weapon, came when he was 14 years old. Roman was on the streets this week after his release from prison seven months before his three-year sentence was up after his conviction for various charges, according to law-enforcement records.
