A Broward motorcycle deputy died Wednesday night after a collision earlier in the day with a car in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy Christopher Schaub, 47, had been airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition after the crash, which happened about 2:20 p.m.

Hundreds of fellow deputies, family members and friends gathered at the Fort Lauderdale hospital as Schaub underwent hours of surgery Wednesday night.

The nature of his injuries was not immediately disclosed.

After the accident at West McNab Road and North Andrews Avenue, pieces of Schaub’s motorcycle were scattered in the intersection.

The deputy and a silver Mercedes-Benz had collided. The Mercedes’ driver, who was not immediately identified, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident investigation was continuing Wednesday night, said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles.

Schaub had been a Broward deputy for 22 years, BSO spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.
