Amid the erratic play of FIU’s special teams, the kickoff coverage sticks out like a quarter on the sidewalk. Only against UCF did FIU allow more than 17 yards per return. Kicker Jack Griffin has nine touchbacks this season.
This Saturday’s game does feature perhaps the two best kickers in the Sun Belt Conference. Louisiana-Lafayette’s Brett Baer is tied for the nation’s lead in field goals per game and is 16th in scoring. He leads the Sun Belt in scoring, followed by FIU senior running back Darian Mallary and Western Kentucky running back Antonio Andrews. As Griffin did once Saturday and for FIU’s second and third games, Baer also handles Lafayette’s punting.
FIU knows — Baer’s punts pinned FIU inside the 5-yard line four times last season.
