Emmys fashion: red carpet hits and misses

mmarr@MiamiHerald.com

Lookin’ good, ladies! Most of you, anyway.

The Emmys, held at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre Sunday night, saw quite a bit of color, a star-studded rainbow connection.

In traffic, yellow means yield. On the red carpet it was all systems go for Julianne Moore, in an elegant long sleeved Raf Simons for Dior; a pregnant Claire Danes in a decidedly nonmaternity Lanvin gown; and Julie Bowen in a strapless number by Monique Lhuillier she said she felt “brave” to wear.

Orange was another power hue. Prime examples: Once Upon a Time star Ginnifer Goodwin, whose Monique Lhuillier featured branch-like cutouts and a nude-illusion slip underneath; Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi rocked it in a Lhuillier with tulle train. “I wasn’t sure I’d have the guts to wear it,’’ she admitted. Leslie Mann’s Naeem Khan sported a bright tangerine skirt with white beading up top. American Horror Story vet Jessica Lange’s faux sari could have used a refit. The designer was unknown or possibly hiding.

Cleavage was a major accessory of the evening. Letting it (almost) all hang out were Mad Men knockout Christina Hendricks, in a beige belted Christian Siriano, which she said channeled “old Hollywood glamour”; Broke Girl Kat Dennings in a siren-red J Mendel (with lips to match: ouch); and newly single Amy Poehler vamping it up in a backless Stella McCartney. Connie Britton ( Nashville) squeezed into a halter-neck gunmetal Andrew Gn and a braless Heidi Klum did Angelina Jolie proud with a tanned thigh flashing out of her Alexandre Vauthier. Who’s Morena Baccarin? Before Sunday many non- Homeland watchers didn’t know. Monday morning the Brazilian beauty was the woman who had the guts to show off flawless décolletage in her fabulous Basil Soda.

Sofia Vergara’s slinky teal Zuhair Murad gown was so tight she ripped the backside before the ceremony. All can see the Modern Family bombshell’s toned derriere on Twitter. She sent out the embarrassing pic with the post: “Yes!!!! This happened! Jajajajja. I luv my life!!!!” All was fixed because Vergara, still in the dress, was able to boogie down to Gloria Estefan and Enrique Iglesias music at an afterparty.

Red was the color for many an actress. Julia Louis-Dreyfus shows she still has it in a veiled, draped Vera Wang made just for her. Hail to the Veep! Former child star Jena Malone looked all grown up in a silky burgundy Grecian gown by J. Mendel. 30 Rock queen Tina Fey wore a purplish Vivienne Westoood with hardware trim. Nice.

Lucy Liu got points for straying from the monochromatic pack in a dazzling Versace with metal and grommets. “It almost looks like it should be on a shelf,” the Elementary star said. Scandal’s Kerry Washington likewise amped up the glitter in a sexy Vivienne Westwood.

A few rare disappointments: Nicole Kidman in a we’ve-seen-it-before white frock by Antonio Berardi with blue confusion down the front; Julianna Margulies’ Giambattista Valli was in a print fit for a tablecloth. And Zooey Deschanel’s Reem Acra was more Disney princess than TV starlet.
