•  CircX 10th anniversary Retro-Spectacular

Many of Miami’s most charismatic and original dance/performance artists honed their skills and style — and paid the bills — performing with CircX, the smart, edgy, burlesque/acrobatic/dance/ cabaret group headed by New World School of the Arts alum Diana Lozano. The likes of Octavio Campos, Rosie Herrera, Ana Mendez, Natasha Tsakos, Luis Cuevas and others come back for Retro-Spectacular, where they’ll blow up favorite numbers like a tongue-in-cheek bondage ballet, a to-the-edge Apache dance (a melodramatic, man-dominates-woman duet).

• Ballet Austin in Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project

Because it’s done without words, dance can be a vehicle for the unspeakable. Ballet Austin focuses on the greatest genocide of the 20th century in Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project — a ballet choreographed by artistic director Stephen Mills, and inspired by a woman’s true story of surviving the Holocaust. The ballet, which will be performed Nov. 3-4 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, caps a three-month program of exhibits, educational events and concerts focused on issues of intolerance and human rights.

• Miami City Ballet in Viscera

The ballet that young Royal Ballet choreographic prodigy Liam Scarlett created for Miami City Ballet last season was a mesmerizing, musically inspired, rocket-powered work that made brilliant use of the classical tradition and the MCB dancers’ energy and urgent personality. Expect Scarlett and his Miami acolytes (particularly favorite muse Jeanette Delgado) to go further in his second, still-untitled work for the compan.

•  Cambio de Tercio at MDC Live Arts

Flamenco’s ferocity and passion are showcased on a grand scale in the Arsht Center’s annual Flamenco Festival Miami (which this season features Ballet Flamenco de Andalucia March 14-17 at the Arsht). But the soulfulness and individuality of this intensely traditional, yet constantly evolving art form are best highlighted in small groups such as the Nuevo Ballet Español, which opens the MDC Live Arts series. This Spanish troupe of dancers and musicians will perform Cambio de Tercio, a combination of folkloric and contemporary influences from hot flamenco choreographers Rojas and Rodriguez.

Oct. 5-6, 2012 at the Colony Theater

•  Compagnie Marie Chouinard

This Montreal-based dance troupe stands out in the contemporary dance world for its animalistic, sensual qualities, and for its striking visual imagery; Chouinard’s dances hit your vision and your gut with equal force. Tigertail Productions featues Chouinard’s group in Mouvements, which features a set of towering drawings, and Etude No. 1, where dancers in steel-tipped shoes dance on an amplified stage.
