Dade roundup

South Dade’s Leroy Wilson proves to be just too much for Coral Reef

Special to the Miami Herald

In the District 16-8A opener for South Dade and Coral Reef, the Buccaneers shut down the Barracudas 19-0 Friday night at Harris Field.

South Dade (3-1) took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter on senior running back Leroy Wilson’s 1-yard touchdown.

The seven-play drive started at the Barracudas’ 41-yard line when Marcus Leslie’s punt was blocked. Senior quarterback Brian Stewart’s three-yard run on third down kept the drive alive.

On the ensuing play, he found junior wide receiver C.J. Worton for 17 yards.

After consecutive penalties, junior running back Denis Zimero rushed for 17 yards to put the Buccaneers inside the 10. Senior running back Willie Cortes ran up the middle for 5 yards, setting up Wilson’s touchdown.

On South Dade’s first drive, junior Luis Zitzun’s 39-yard field goal was blocked after Coral Reef quarterback Nicodem Pierre fumbled the snap from the shotgun and gave the Buccaneers solid field position on the turnover.

Coral Reef (1-2) couldn’t capitalize on good position of its own on its final drive of the first half. From the opponent’s 45-yard line, Pierre found Tristen Ferguson for 22 yards through the air. But Pierre was sacked on three of the next four plays as the offense turned it over on downs for one of the three times.

Wilson scored on another 1-yard run in the third quarter, leaping over the pile into the end zone, but the extra point was blocked and the score was 13-0.

With 6:44 left in the third quarter, Coral Reef’s Treshez Ellzey went down after he fell awkwardly. He was hit in the helmet on a block from a South Dade offensive lineman.

Ellzey remained on the field for 25 minutes while paramedics attended to him. At one point, he was able to move his right leg, but he was stabilized on a stretcher as they carted him off the field.
