Wiggins’ TD run in OT lifts North Miami Beach

Special to The Miami Herald

Despite having a young team and committing numerous penalties, North Miami Beach managed a 29-23 overtime victory against Palmetto on Thursday night at Southridge.

Quarterback Cedric Wiggins closed out the game with a 7-yard run to win it for the Chargers.

Palmetto was undefeated coming into the game and had a one-touchdown lead going into the half after a touchdown catch by Wendell Dunn. But the Chargers came back strong at the start of the third quarter, with Wiggins leading the offense down the field.

Despite several penalties, a sack and a fumble 12 plays later, Steve Ishmael scored on a 3-yard reception from Wiggins.

The Panthers immediately responded after the Chargers’ successful two-point conversion, and Kendtron Daye ran back an 84-yard kick return.

The Chargers went on to score again, tying the score at 14-14, but the Panthers pounced again.

Isiah Scott ran the ball 85 yards on the kickoff to make the score 20-15 after a failed two-point conversation.

The Chargers rallied and scored another touchdown, making the two-point conversion with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers kicked a field goal with four seconds left in regulation after driving the ball to the 35 to take the game to overtime.

“We have a young team, and I am proud of them for holding in there,” North Miami Beach coach Jeff Bertani said. “Special teams were terrible, but we had guys going both ways, and Palmetto is a good team.”

The Chargers will face Carol City next week.
