Carrollton’s golf team follows the mantra “one shot at a time” in order to bounce back from last year’s disappointment.

After missing out on the state competition by nine strokes in the District 24-1A tournament to Ransom Everglades, the girls have been focusing on their preshot routines and attitudes.

The Cyclones took a step toward their goal by capturing the Youth Fair Invitational on Wednesday at Palmetto Golf Course.

“That’s been our motto throughout this season,” coach Armando Echeverria said. “I think everyone stuck to it, especially on a day like today where we have so many girls out here and the rounds get a little longer. It’s important to make sure they keep taking it one shot at a time.”

Ransom Everglades, which finished second as a team Wednesday, also snapped Carrollton’s seven straight years of winning the Youth Fair Invitational in 2011. Golfers from 13 schools participated.

Carrollton senior Julie Steinbauer took the individual title by one stroke, shooting a 78.

TERRA’s Franchesca De La Torre and Ransom’s Carolina Garrett, who were in Steinbauer’s group that played its round first, finished second and third, respectively.

“On the 17 tee box, my coach gave me some great advice,” Steinbauer said. “I had bogeyed two in a row and he told me to just keep focus and it would be OK. I was happy I was able to come in with two pars and stay solid.”

Tied at 78 following the course’s 18 holes, De La Torre shot one stroke better than Garrett in a one-hole playoff for second place.

“We didn’t even know we were going into a playoff until right before,” De La Torre said. “I just tried to keep calm, pretend it wasn’t a playoff and just relax.”

With three seniors on this year’s team, Echeverria knows now is the time to dream of making it to Howey-in-the-Hills for a chance at a state championship.

“Everyone’s mindset is get back to state and next year we’ll look to rebuild,” he said. “Tanya [Eathakotti], our No. 2 player, is only 12 years old. We’re very excited about the future and what we have going on this season.”
