Sports-talk radio and Twitter were abuzz Tuesday over a confrontation between the Dolphins’ general manager and an unhappy fan at Sunday’s home opener.

Jeff Ireland, the embattled head of the team’s personnel department, admitted to The Miami Herald that he used a profanity after a fan in the club level of Sun Life Stadium suggested at halftime that the best move Ireland could make was to fire himself. The Dolphins trailed at the time, but went on to win the game 35-13.

“It caught me off guard,” Ireland said. “I just turned and walked away, but I did say the word. I regret I used the word I used. I thought I was using it under my breath. I guess I kind of said it loud enough that he could hear it.”

News of the altercation first came on 790 The Ticket on Tuesday, when a caller told the station he witnessed Ireland cursing at a fan. A short time later, a man who identified himself only as Sean, a longtime season-ticket holder, claimed he was on the receiving end of the profanity and appeared to take it as a badge of honor.

“I expressed my displeasure over the organization,” he said. “I don’t think he particularly liked it, and then I made a suggestion how he could fix the problem, and he didn’t particularly like that suggestion either.”

• The Dolphins released defensive lineman Ryan Baker just a week after signing him, a sign that Tony McDaniel could return from his knee injury Sunday. They filled the roster spot by signing Andre Fluellen (6-2, 300 pounds), a defensive tackle who spent the past four seasons with Detroit, his agent said on Twitter.

• Running back Reggie Bush and quarterback Ryan Tannehill have been nominated for the NFL’s ground player and rookie of the week, respectively. The winners will be determined via a vote on NFL.com.

• Dolphins players Davone Bess and Mike Pouncey, along with cheerleaders and team CEO Mike Dee, surprised three local high school students with $5,000 scholarships Tuesday. Sephora Dubreuze (Boca Raton Community), Kimi Farrington (Pompano Beach) and Ashira Vantrees (Cooper City) were honored as Sun Life Rising Star Award recipients for their “remarkable achievements.”
