15. BOYD ANDERSON (2-0)
AT 17. NORTHEAST (2-1)
7 p.m., Friday.
A week after losing to Hallandale, Northeast came up with one of the most notable upsets of the young season.
The Hurricanes upended defending Class 8A state runner-up Miramar with a tremendous effort from its defense. Northeast scored all of its points on a pair of interception returns for touchdowns. Zeffery Clark had the first, and Stacy Coley followed up with the game-changer right before the half.
Northeast also did a good job shutting down Miramars backfield limiting the Patriots to only 44 yards rushing.
Here comes another potent offense this week though.
Boyd Anderson was caught potentially looking ahead to this all-important district showdown last week. Deerfield Beach put together an impressive defensive performance of its own slowing down the Cobras offense led by quarterback Greg Hankerson. Boyd Anderson, which fell behind 10-0 at the half, got its offense going to cut it to 10-7 in the fourth quarter before the game was suspended due to lightning with a little over nine minutes left.
The focus should be back this week in a game that would put the winner in a good early position in the race for the District 14-7A championship.
But will Hankerson avoid early mistakes against a tough Northeast secondary?
Andres pick: Boyd Anderson 14, Northeast 13.
AT WESTERN (2-0)
7 p.m., Friday.
Trying to decide who wins this game, you could literally flip a coin.
Both teams are off to unbeaten starts for similar reasons.
Each has a solid quarterback leading a potent offense. And each team has been able to balance it with a strong defense and good running.
Everglades Caleb Goldson has been solid in the Gators spread option passing for seven touchdowns and 550 yards, and running for two touchdowns.
Westerns solid quarterback Wade Freebeck has put up big numbers as well, throwing for 515 yards and six touchdowns in two games so far. The Wildcats defense has also been solid through two games.
The game could come down to Everglades pass defense if it can slow down Freebeck. The Gators have nine interceptions so far this season, and have forced 13 turnovers overall.
Andres pick: Everglades 28, Western 27.
DEERFIELD BEACH (0-2)
VS. TARAVELLA (2-1)
7 p.m., Friday, Coral Springs.
On the heels of a lopsided defeat against Blanche Ely, the Trojans need to get back on track quickly in a district clash against Deerfield that could go a long way toward deciding one of the playoff spots in District 11-8A.
Deerfield Beach is coming off a solid performance against perennial playoff favorite Boyd Anderson. The Bucks took a 10-7 lead into the fourth quarter before lightning forced the suspension of a potential huge victory.
Running back Brandon Powell paced Deerfield with 95 yards and a touchdown in the first half of that game, and forced a potent Boyd Anderson offense into mistakes that kept it out of the end zone.
Taravella had as bad, or worse of a game than it even had in the playoffs last year against Cypress Bay. The Trojans mustered only one yard rushing and quarterback Lorenzo Jerome completed only six passes for 95 yards.
Coach Dan Marguriets squad has too much to look that bad two weeks in a row. This will be a good matchup, but look for a bounce back from the Trojans.
Andres pick: Taravella 21, Deerfield Beach 14.
