Broward County commissioners give themselves power to spend leftover funds

 

Broward leaders voted Monday to approve a controversial proposal that allows earmarking of unspent office funds.

Miami-Dade County commissioners were blasted for it, a Palm Beach County grand jury recommended ending it, and Broward County commissioners are about to launch it: discretionary funds for county commissioners.

With the approval of $12,000 for a small library and some community, art and cultural programs, Broward commissioners this month entered a realm they conceded is fraught with landmines — allowing commissioners to spend their leftover office funds on pet projects in their districts.
