“The best book I’ve read in ages is de Kooning: An American Master, by Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan, the biography of the great American artist Willem de Kooning. It’s just breathtaking the way the authors are able to recreate the exuberant (and painful) wonder of being poor and talented in New York during the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. It wouldn’t matter how much I recommended it; the book is even better than anything I might say about it.”
