A FALCON FLIES HIGHEST IN WEEK 1 AS HERALD OPENS 2012 PASS RANKINGS

Falcon Matt Ryan crowns our Top 20 chart after Week 1 as The Miami Herald launches its 15th season of Passer Success System (PASS) NFL quarterback rankings. Four-time defending champion Drew Brees of the Saints bows off the chart in 25th place. The Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill begins in 32nd place. Our simple formula, unchanged since its inception in 1998, factors accuracy, yardage, touchdown/interception ratio and team result. These are passer ratings per se and do not factor a QB’s running ability. Most passer ratings including the NFL’s are complicated and percentile-based, allowing a player who missed half a season injured to still win a passing title. Our rankings are cumulative, placing a premium on passers who are consistently productive and avoid injury or benching. Look for our weekly 2012 rankings in this space every Sunday.
