Bo feels ready to made the move toward the big-time, the main stage, sports entertainment’s best, WWE.
Prior to his IRS days, Bo’s father (as Mike Rotunda) teamed with Bo’s uncle, Barry Windham, to win the WWF tag team titles. They were managed by Capt. Lou Albano. Bo’s uncles, Barry and Kendall Windham, won WCW and WWC tag team gold. Barry was an NWA champion. Kendall was a Florida singles and tag team champion. Bo’s grandfather, Blackjack Mulligan, wrestled main event matches in the WWWF against Pedro Morales and Bruno Sammartino. He’s won many titles. Collectively, they’ve won many titles.
“Coming into [the business] with my father, my grandfather and my uncles backgrounds, I have big shoes to fill,” Bo said. “I wouldn’t say that’s hindering me, but I have a lot of expectations. All I can do is work as hard as I can and keep pushing, do the best that I can. I respect what my father did, but I don’t want to live in his shadow. I want to make my own path.”
Wonder what the holidays are like with the Rotundas and the Windhams together. Bo wouldn’t commit to which side of the family is tougher (Rotundas or Windhams).
Bo does refer to his larger than life grandfather as ‘Pops,’ and no one messed with the 6-9, 340-pound Pops, a legendary wrestling figure. Mulligan -- an ally to Dusty Rhodes in Florida’s wrestling circles, winning U.S. tag team titles together -- had a memorable feud with the evil Kevin Sullivan. Mulligan also formed a famous tag team with Blackjack Lanza, managed by WWE Hall of Famer Bobby the Brain Heenan. The Blackjacks were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Heenan in 2006.
Bo wasn’t alive when Pops was at his best in the ring, but he did see him wrestler via videos and technology. Bo was around to witness firsthand IRS, the heel tax collector who teamed with fellow bad guy Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase for WWF tag team gold.
Needless to say, it was a different time, and fans reacted differently compared to today’s fan knowledge of sports entertainment. To fans, IRS was a real-life villain. To Bo, he was a loving father, just playing a role on TV. So Bo had his share of fights growing up, defending dad’s real good name. He also went on the road with his dad, when he could. He hung out with Hulk Hogan and Ted DiBiase’s kids.
