High-speed chase ends at I-95 and Broward Boulevard

Miami Herald Staff Report

Police arrested three suspected burglars following a high-speed chase that began in Miami-Dade and ended on the northbound I-95 exit ramp to Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday morning.

The chase, which began at the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade, reached speeds as high as 120 mph, according to WSVN News, whose helicopter crews broadcast the chase on TV.

The alleged burglars fled in a dark Mercedes-Benz sedan, and by the time the chase reached I-95 in North Miami-Dade, the getaway car was missing the passenger-side front tire and riding only on its rim as the driver swerved across all lanes and onto the shoulders trying to evade other motorists and police.

The chase ended when the Mercedes spun out of control on the eastbound Broward Boulevard exit. A second car was struck by the Mercedes and appeared to have a damaged trunk. But no one was reported to be seriously injured.

After the Mercedes came to a stop on the side of the exit ramp, three men exited the vehicle. Two of them attempted to run down the ramp embankment but were quickly captured by police. A third lay prone next to the car as soon as he got out.

Det. Javier Baez of the Miami-Dade Police Department said the three men are suspected of burglarizing three homes in Kendall and Pinecrest Tuesday morning.
