Letters to the Editor

Put down the phone

There is a strange malady that has afflicted a huge percentage of our population; namely, an overwhelming compulsion to be constantly communicating. Folks are totally in love with their electronic devices. They carry them and use them everywhere – in restaurants, at the movies, at the gym, while driving.

I find that most folks don’t really have much of importance or interest to say, so what are these people constantly yakking about?

You see couples on a date texting someone else while ignoring the person they are with. You see families in a restaurant with every member talking or texting while totally ignoring each other. How pathetic, how sad, how rude!

I own a cell phone and use it occasionally, but keep it primarily for emergency purposes. I don’t text, tweet or Facebook. Will I be picked up by the authorities and placed under observation for being weird and un-American? I wonder.
