Hialeah budget hearings begin Thursday

Hialeah residents can share their thoughts about the city’s $117 million budget at two upcoming public hearings.

The first hearing is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13 at Hialeah City Hall, 501 Palm Ave. The second hearing will take place on Sept. 27 at the same time and place.

Hialeah’s mayor has proposed a lower tax rate for the next fiscal year: $6.30 per $1,000 of taxable property, compared to the current rate of $6.54. Council members have to approve the rate at the public hearings.

The typical homeowner with a median home price assessed at $99,500, and taking the standard Homestead exemption, would pay about $627 in municipal taxes under the new rate. That’s about $23 less than under the current rate.
