Miami Marlins’ Jose Reyes proud of durability after making 400th career steal

Until being presented with the actual base he stole for his 400th career steal, Jose Reyes was unaware he was even approaching a milestone shared with only five other active players.

“When the guy brought the base to me, you know, ‘That’s your 400th stolen base,’ I didn’t even know,” said Reyes, who joined the 400 club on Saturday with a steal of second base.

Reyes stole two more bases Sunday to give him 32 this season, five behind National League leader Michael Bourn of the Braves.

But the number that Reyes is most proud of this season is 132.

That’s the number of games he has played in, and it’s the strongest indication that Reyes is completely healthy for the first time in years.

Reyes, who has played in all but two of the Marlins’ 134 games, has not played in as many as 150 games since 2008.

“That’s one part I’m very proud and happy, just to be on the field with no problems,” said Reyes, who battled an assortment of leg injuries over the past few seasons while with the Mets.

Juan Pierre is the active stolen base leader with 586.

Others with at least 400 stolen bases: Ichiro Suzuki, Carl Crawford, Johnny Damon and Omar Vizquel.

Happy hoarder

A few days ago, minor-league pitcher Tom Koehler was convinced he was heading home for the winter.

The right-hander for Triple A New Orleans was told he probably wouldn’t be among the Marlins’ September call-ups, and so he began discarding equipment.

“I got a little frustrated and threw away some of my cleats and stuff,” Koehler said. “This was probably a couple of days ago, and I thought the season was over.

“And then they called me when I was on the bus back to New Orleans to let me know that it was happening. I was a hoarder, so I had plenty of stuff in my locker, luckily.”

Koehler was one of two players Miami promoted Sunday from its top minor-league affiliate.

The Marlins also recalled left-handed reliever Dan Jennings. Whether there will be more call-ups remains to be seen.

Double A Jacksonville was eliminated from playoff contention Saturday, so those players are now free to go.

Koehler was used as a starter at New Orleans, where he went 12-11 with a 4.17 ERA this season.

But, given the overflow of starters on the Marlins roster, he figures he’ll be pitching out of the bullpen.

“I’m going to assume I’m going to be in the ’pen with there being 13 starters right now,” Koehler said. “But whatever way they use me, I don’t care.

“It’s pitching regardless of whether it’s one inning or six.”

Nolasco is coming off his third career shutout when he defeated the Nationals on Tuesday.
