Miami Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton has mixed fortunes during road trip

Despite breaking the Marlins’ record for most home runs on a single road trip, Giancarlo Stanton was partly frustrated with the way he has hit in general during the swing out west.

“If you want to be honest, I’m having either terrible at-bats or hitting a homer,” Stanton said. “This is kind of the most ups and downs that I’ve ever had.”

Stanton clubbed eight homers during the 11-game trip, which broke the previous mark of six that was shared by Preston Wilson, Mike Lowell and Miguel Cabrera. Stanton also hit .310.

But he also struck out 14 times in 42 at-bats.

“It’s not total failure, but ...,” Stanton said.

Manager Ozzie Guillen said Stanton is about the only thing worth watching anymore on the Marlins.

“He’s the only positive,” Guillen said.

“Every two or three innings, we [get to] enjoy this game, seeing this kid at the plate.”

•  Donovan Solano extended his hitting streak to 10 games Sunday with a fifth-inning single off Aaron Harang. Solano hit .366 (15 for 41) during the trip.

Though he homered Friday, Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez ended up going 1 for 12 and struck out six times in the series against his former team.

Roughed up

Starting pitcher Josh Johnson described Saturday’s outing as “terrible.”

Johnson gave up six runs on 10 hits in only three innings of a game the Marlins ended up losing 8-2 to the Dodgers. He threw a whopping total of 89 pitches during his abbreviated stint. Adrian Gonzalez Josh Beckett Nick Punto Carl Crawford

The Marlins’ starters rank 13th in the National League with a staff ERA of 4.30, which could translate to trouble for pitching coach Randy St. Claire.

Facing a nemesis

As far as the Marlins are probably concerned, the Washington Nationals can’t shut down Stephen Strasburg soon enough.

Strasburg, scheduled to pitch Tuesday at Marlins Park, has not yielded a run to the Marlins since Omar Infante’s sacrifice fly in the third inning on Sept. 17, 2011. That was 27 scoreless innings ago.

The Nationals are adamant that they will soon place Strasburg in winter storage so as not to risk further injury to his surgically repaired right arm.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said last week that Strasburg would likely miss his final two or three starts, which would reduce the number remaining to about four or five.

That means the Marlins will likely have to face him one final time in Washington next month.

In his three starts against the Marlins this season, Strasburg is 2-0 with 19 strikeouts over 18 innings.

Coming up

•  Monday: No game.

•  Tuesday: Marlins RHP Ricky Nolasco (9-12, 5.07 ERA) vs. Washington Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg (15-5, 2.85), 7:10 p.m., Marlins Park.

•  Wednesday: Marlins RHP Jacob Turner (1-2, 6.87) vs. Nationals LHP Ross Detwiler (7-6, 3.25), 7:10 p.m., Marlins Park.

Scouting report: After a day off Monday, the Marlins return home for six games against the Nationals and Mets.

Nolasco, who is scheduled to start Tuesday’s series opener against Washington, has gone 1-6 with a 6.70 ERA since the All-Star break.
