FIU Golden Panthers’ Mario Cristobal praises Darian Dyson

Some scouting services had defensive lineman Darian Dyson, 6-3, 320 pounds, listed as FIU’s best recruit of the 2012 class. Dyson, out of New Orleans Edna Karr High, is becoming increasingly noticeable in practices and scrimmages.

“We call him “Double,” as in “Double D,” coach Mario Cristobal said. “Double has just shown a tremendous amount of explosion and power for a guy his age. You get a defensive tackle of that caliber, you just want to keep throwing him in there. They’re so used to bullying guys around at the high school level — coming off the ball and throwing guards on top of quarterbacks — we want him to feel the double-team vise of two 300-pound mature offensive linemen, a couple of guys who have been in the weight room for four or five years.”

• Cristobal expects to make the decision by the end of the week on the No. 2 quarterback fight between redshirt freshman Lorenzo Hammonds Jr. and true freshman E.J. Hilliard, out of Northwestern High.
