Terminal H at Miami International Airport was evacuated Wednesday night while police checked out an abandoned piece of luggage.
The abandoned luggage was spotted by a Miami-Dade police officer about 7 p.m. near a carousel. The immediate area was evacuated, a police canine checked and “alerted to the luggage,” police spokesman Detective Roy Rutland said.
The evacuated area was expanded. The department’s bomb squad followed and examined the bag. No explosives were found. The bag appeared to belong to a woman, Rutland said, who was already out of state and forgot her luggage.
Only a few flights were affected, airport spokesman Marc Henderson said, because the ticket counters for their airlines were in the evacuated area. Flights that were scheduled for those gates were switched to other areas.
By 10 p.m., the area was deemed safe.
