Two arrested in theft of 500 canaries from Miami-Dade home

Two suspects have been arrested in theft of 500 canaries from a Southwest Miami-Dade home. They are accused of breaking into Manuel Sanchez’s home, taking the birds and selling them to three pet shops in the area.

Arrested: Ariel Rodriguez, 27, and Luis Suarez, 26, both of Miami-Dade. They are each charged with residential burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property.

Miami-Dade police detectives tracked down and recovered 150 of the birds, valued at $30 a piece.

The 87-year-old owner told police the birds were stolen in May and that he has visited pet shops in a quest to find them.
